October 2nd, 9th and 10th
“Palladium” concert hall and music house “Daile”
Skaņu Mežs, the main event for adventurous music in the Baltic states, is having its lucky 13th edition this year, featuring whole 9 SHAPE artists who will share the stage with Squarepusher, James Holden, Zs, Rrose, Powell, Peter Brötzmann, Frederic Rzewski, John Butcher, Christoph Heemann and many more.
While October 2nd at the “Palladium” concert hall will be mostly devoted to rhythmic music and experiments within this field, the remaining two evenings at the music house “Daile”, a former movie theater, will present a quite diverse mixture of genres, ranging from contemporary composition and free improv to avant-pop and “cinema for the ear”.
A rather intense package of educational events will also be offered to SHAPE artists and non-professional enthusiasts alike: the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music will open its doors to Frederic Rzewski, the famous virtuoso pianist and composer, with a lecture on modern music, John Edwards, the British upright bass player who will conduct a free improvisation workshop, and Jakob Ullmann, who, even though a SHAPE member himself, will give a lecture on his highly unique composition technique.
In addition to the SHAPE artist presentations and educational events, there is another large-scale project happening at Skaņu Mežs’2015: it’s “Experimental Music Lighthouses”, which sees the festival interacting and exchanging program elements with their long-time partner, Tromsø’s Insomnia.
